A Fan's Biggest Dilemma

Every fan has a favorite player. Every fan has an arch-nemeses. What do you to when free agency brings these two things together?

When I write of a favorite player, I am not talking about the here and now of whatever sport is currently in season. I am talking about the singular player who defines us as a fan. I am a Mets fan, and Jose Reyes is quickly becoming my favorite Met of all time. But he in not THE favorite player. I am a Jets fan. My wife recently bought me a Jonathan VilmaJersey. I like Vilma. The Jets haven't had an impact linebacker like him for most of my life. But he does not inspire much passion inside me. The remaining team in my nom-de-plume is the Devils. The Devils have been my true passion since early childhood. My parents didn't get Sportschannel, so I grew up listening to the games on the radio, running reports down to my parents who were nice enough to pretend to care. Now, I loved Devils over the years. My first jersey had role player Doug Brown's name on the back. What Devils fan does not love Scott Stevens or Martin Brodeur. But the one player I truly love. The one player who defines me as a sports fan. The one player that my wife, after less than a year of dating, knew to get on the back of my new jersey was Scott Gomez. The diminutive center from Mexico (of all places) was invigorating to watch. The way he could skate, darting in and out of traffic, creating opportunities for his teammates the way that the Great One used to do it. Scott Gomez is my favorite player.

To this day, there is one word in sports that haunts me. If the mention this word on the radio, I have to change the channel. Believe it or not, this word ruined my senior prom. "MATTEAU." The year was 1994. The game was numbered 7. The score was tied 1-1, the Devils having scored with 7 seconds left to send the game to overtime. in the second overtime, Stephane Matteau picked up a loose puck around the net, swept out in front and jammed the puck home, propelling the Rangers to an eventual Stanley Cup and the Devils home (the Devils would rebound and win 3 cups in the next 10 years). Fittingly, I was listening to the game on my car radio, driving to the afterparty following a night of sneaking out of the prom to check the score. My date was not a hockey fan. Suffice it to say I did not get lucky that night. Thats why I married a woman who was recruited to an Ivy League school to play ice hockey. But I digress.

I hated the New York Rangers since childhood. I don't know if it was the proximity to my beloved Devils that fashioned this hatred, but the Rangers have always been my arch-nemeses. Now, I hate the Patriots and their faux dynasty and the Braves have broken my heart too many times to mention. I hate all things Philadelphia (except the pretzel and Rita's water ice) and their boorish fans. But I only have one true hate. There is only one team whose demise can make me happy. There is only one team whose success can result in hefty psychiatrist bills, and that is the New York Rangers. The Rangers are Christianity's Judas, Judaism's Haman, Democrat's Cheney and Palestinians' Israeli all tied up into one. They are the epitome of evil.

So what do you do, as a fan, when good meets evil? What do you do when the Favorite signs a mega-deal with the Arch-Enemy? I still love Scott Gomez. I just love the way he plays the game. And I still despise the Rangers. Their failures since the '94 Cup have kept my therapy bills low. But yesterday, Scott Gomez signed a 7 year $53.5 million contract with the Rangers that will pay him $10 million this season . Now, other Devils have gone across the river and taken the money. Bruce Driver was a supporting defenseman who was reaching the end of his career when he went to the Dark Side. Bobby Holik left for a contract he never lived up to, but Holik was the kinda player you always knew you'd hate if he was on the other team. But Scott Gomez was my one true love. His enthusiasm for the game is now across the river playing for Satan's all-star team. Something has to give.

I honestly don't know how to solve this dilemma I still love Scott Gomez, and I still hate the Rangers. But this is only day 1. I have 7 more seasons to let this work its way out. 7 more seasons of watching my favorite player skate for the enemy while his jersey remains hidden in my closet reminding all that once upon a time there was a true love story. But free agency, money, and the work have Satan destroyed that true love.

Wow, tough question. The closest thing I've had happen were Doc Gooden and Robin Ventura playing for the Yankees, but I think it's fair to say that these, well, are not close at all. And Philly pretzels suck.

Of course there's eleventy billion potato chip and pretzel factories in Eastern PA (The Home of REAL gravy-blooded Americans!)

and Philly pretzels only suck if you ingest them... They do work better than Marge Simpson's Whitey Whackers!

You cross your fingers, hope for the best, and curse the media that seems bent on finding any evidence of a problem (and today at Valley Ranch, T.O. put his practice shorts on left leg first, while all his teammates are right-leggers. Dissension? Tune in at six!). I'm convinced that if T.O. does eventually blow up, it will be induced by the media constantly creating problems.

Face it, you've been dumped. You may have a broken heart, and you'll still ache longingly for the way he caresses a puck (cue porno music), but he's not yours anymore, and you will have to get over him (for seven years at least). It's one thing to be dumped when someone moves across the country. It's another when he's shagging your evil neighbor next door. You need to feel the hate.

If Jose Reyes went to Philly, or worse, the Yankees, I'd still think he was great, but I couldn't root for him any longer. Would I admire his skill? Yes. Could I cheer for him or wear a Jersey? No.

Root for the team, admire the player. This is what makes the NFL's marketing so solid.

I'm sure this article is quite intriguing however it is very hard to read. It's very choppy meaning your sentences are too short. It reads as if you just cut and pasted various statements in an article. I'm not sure how much education you've completed (how old you are) but I just some advice on journalism and writing. Sentences should be more fluid and smooth flowing. Topics should be connected and tie in to eachother. I also like to live by the statement, "Semi-colons are your friend." So just a little advice. I know it has nothing to do with your topic of discussion but I thought I'd share that with you.

I will say this...your comment was a little condescending... I am, by no means, any type of professional writer or journalist and there are easily 50-100 "regular" contributors who are much more knowledgable or talented than I, but when I do provide criticism, I try to put it out there in a most constructive tone (or so I hope)...consider how you say something critical before you say it, that is to say, how you're presenting it...the internet unleashes both the best and worst in us...

Actually in journalism, you're supposed to right with simple, short sentences, because studies show the average American does not have the attention span to read a full article if it has long sentences and/or long paragraphs. That's why you'll find me writing one or two sentences per paragraph. That's also why nobody reads Hemingway anymore.

See, TayTay, I read A Farewell to Arms and I really didn't think the plot was too complicated: Guy goes to war. Guy gets wounded, meets smokin' hot nurse, has sex with her. Guy heals and goes back to war. Guy meets up with nurse again for more sex. Guy goes back to war, then back to the nurse for more sex. Then she dies giving birth. Could've been a hundred pages shorter. It's like a rap song.

I've always heard that Hemingway is an iceberg--most of it is under the surface. I haven't read A Farewell to Arms, but I did read "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place", The Snows of Kilimanjaro, The Sun Also Rises and some of the Nick Adams stories. The iceberg metaphor is true for each.

First of all, I am a Rangers Fan and I understand your point. I appreciate what the Devils have done over the years, because above all, I am a HOCKEY Fan. But you can't blame free agency or money on this. King Lou had the ability to sign Gomez for long term two years ago, but took him to arbitration. Because of the cap, everybody can only spend up to that amount of money. So it isn't like the rangers went on a spending spree like they had done in the past. They are still limited, it is just that they had deals in place with their current players that give them the room. Lou didn't do that. Also, after being lou's whipping boy, did you really think he was going to stay? And with no coach to be named, why would he sign a long term contract with a team who he doesn't know who his boss is? They may bring in a guy who he absolutely hates or who doesn't like him. Unfortunately, for devils fans, the devils are on the way down, and the Rangers are on their way up. It happens. The Rangers and the fans suffered for 7 years out of the playoffs. Mark Messier, one of the greatest to play the game couldn't even end his career with a playoff run. I was a huge John Vanbiesbrouk fan. And I actually was upset when the Rangers let him go in the expansion draft. And when he ended up on the Flyers and even the Devils I was mortified. I actually have a Panthers Beezer jersey, but no way in hell was I going to own a flyer or a devils jersey with his name. So i know what you mean. Don't blame the player for wanting something more, or the team that signs him who can truly see his real value. Blame the team that let him get away for not appreciating what he meant to your organization or the fans.

Oh please Ranger fans, shut it down. You always claim during the summer that the Devils are in decline, this guy left, that guy left. We hear it all the time. And every year, the Devils have a better season than the Rangers. You think it's all about the big ticket mega expensive all stars, that's how to make a team. And every year the Devils prove that they can compete at the highest level without superstars, without the big names. The signings didn't even address the Rangers' main glaring weakness, the defense! Same thing every year. Talk your smack in the spring after your team does something. For now, all you have is a good team on paper. And by the way, if you think Scott Gomez is worth the contract your Rangers just gave him, watch and learn. He is a small playmaking center who can get assists when he wants to play. He won't get many goals and is very inconsistent. He has been in the doghouse more than twice. Have fun saddled with that ludicrious, long term commitment! And there is plenty of time for Lou to make moves, not sure why everyone thinks the 7/3 Devils is the team that will be playing next year. Another season played, another season in which the NJ Devils will own the rangers despite the "predictions."

To your stupid reply, here is another Rangers fan to shut you up. First off, the Devils had their moment of glory but it's over now, this team will have a brand new arena with only half of it filled to watch their boring style of hockey. The Devils farm team is crap now, didn't even make the playoffs, so much for those prospects. Unless they get a decent backup goalie, they will have a great regular season and then tank in the playoffs, remember it's all about how you finish, and thats winning the cup. Rangers have drafted well the past few years, now we got your beloved Gomez and Chris Drury to start a new core when Jagr and Shanny retire. Now all of a sudden you see these flaws in Gomez, please give it up, he wants to play for the Rangers therefore I predict he will have a great this year, besides this isn't a player on the verge of retirement like other Free Agents the Rangers signed, both Drury and Gomez are in their prime. You talked about the Rangers defense, please don't talk what you do not know. With Mara, Giarardi, Pock, Malik, and now Staal on our blueline, trust they will hold thier own.
