AFC preview and predictions

by Steve

OMFG the New England Patriots got Randy Moss, for only a 4th round pick, they signed the best free agent linebacker Adalius Thomas, he's ONLY 30! Give them the trophy now! In reality however, the NFL is about as predictable as the lottery. It seems like every team has at least some flaw, even if that only glaring flaw is too much of a sure thing. What will happen:

AFC EAST

New England Patriots (11-5) As much as I hate the Patriots and their coach/QB/fans/etc. They are better than anyone else in the AFC East and should win yet another division title. But, their linebackers are older than dust, Rosevelt Colvin is 30, Audalius Thomas is 30, Tedi Bruschi 34, Mike Vrabel 32, but at least they have Seau 2nd on the depth chart at a young 38. Can Lawrence Maroney shoulder the load and stay healthy?

Buffalo Bills (8-8) I'm an optimist, so I feel the Bills will improve on their 2006 record of 7 wins, but aren't ready for the jump to the wild card. I like the defense without Spikes and Fletcher, they never achieved anything with the Bills and led them no where. The defense has consistently folded in big games or situations dating back to at least 2004 week 1 and certainly before. Time for Losman to silence the haters, Lynch at 12, is he the answer?

New York Jets (7-9) Every year I seem to doubt the Jets, mostly because they are the Jets, but probably because of Chadwick Pennington. I don't understand how this guy wins games, gets his team to the post season, and actually performs admirably. Again, I feel the Jets won't be as good in 2007, Mangini is due for a sophomore slump. Rumors of the offensive line regressing, can Thomas Jones be a featured back, who are their wide receivers, how glad are they to see McGahee leave the division etc.

Miami Dolphins (5-11) With a relatively easy first 6 weeks of the season, the Dolphins could surprise with their record early, but will almost definitely falter late. The quarterback is old as dirt, the defense is aging and will probably tire as the season progresses, and they have a new coach new system yet kept Mike Mularkey. That is a sure 2-3 extra loses with half back options at the goal line. Ted Ginn needs to prove he isn't a bust and that will be tough with Trent Green's noodle arm.

North

Cincinnati Bengals (10-6) Everyone is reminded that ACL tears take 2 years to recover from, so look for Carson Palmer to get after it this season. The offense will be there, its the defense the Bengals should be worried about. Also a tough division could keep the North race alive threw December, but the youth of this team should out last the decrepit old age of the black birds.

Baltimore Ravens (10-6) They lose the tie breaker because they have an overrated running back and a quarterback who may show his age sooner than people think this season. Some how the Ravens won 13 games last season, I doubt that occurs again. Their whole defense is scary, but Ray Ray the murder is getting old and they lost A Thomas, so they aren't a 100% lock more like 90%. McGahee is not a game changing back, he'll have a better '07 than '06, but he won't be making any run at the all time rushing record to be sure.

Pittsburgh Steelers (8-8) They keep their streak of .500+ seasons alive but barely. Who really knows if Mike Tomlin is a good coach and the heir to Cowher's thrown. A new system and coaches could stunt Ben Roethlisberger's growth. He will need to rebound from a strange 2006 which was filled with surgeries and injuries. I don't seem them as a very scary team, although it is tough to beat them in their own barn which should help them reach eight victories.

Cleveland Browns (6-10) They have a lame duck coach, stuck between two eras, the Brady Quinn (Notre Dame curse?) Era and the BQ Era (Before Quinn). For Crennel to keep his job, the team needs to do what exactly, perform miracles? They dropped huge cash in a guard that hasn't played yet, and Jamal Lewis is their running back. Oh yea and Charlie Frye is under center, for now.

South

Indianapolis Colts (11-5) They won the SuperBowl and still have Peyton Manning as their quarterback. The defense has lost some people so it should be interesting to see who fills in and takes over on the defensive side of the ball. Can Joseph Addai be a featured back with the absence of Dominic Rhodes? SB slump?

Tennessee Titans (8-8) I am probably underrating this team because of my disdain for Vince Young. Then again maybe not. They lost Travis Henry, their wide receivers are mediocre, and the defense isn't especially stout. VY needs another year to work on becoming an actually quarterback, but that will take time with Bo Scaife as your go to threat on offense. Madden curse?

Jacksonville Jaguars (8-8) Another lame duck coach in Jack Del Rio, he needs to make the playoffs, and it doesn't appear to be in the stars this season. The next great quarterback and franchise savior only 2 years ago, Byron Leftwich is out, and I guess David Garrard is in. The guy is a pocket passer with equal to or less skill than Leftwich and isn't a top tier QB. The running game should still be strong, and the defense is upper half but slipping.

Houston Texans (5-11) Is Matt Schaub real or a mirage? We'll find out if he really is that much better than say David Carr this season. He has only played in mop up duty in Atlanta, but at 6'5 237 he has the size, we'll see if its between the ears on a Texans team still looking for sun light. Ahman Green is the starting running back with Ron Dayne backing him up, ouch.

West

San Diego Chargers (12-4) Shaun Merriman is a cheater, he took steroids. He has a stupid dance he does after tackles too. Kinda douchie isn't it? If LaDanian Tomlinson stays healthy and Rivers doesn't regress (both possibilities) this team should be fine, at least for this season. Before anointing this team anything, he have to remember Norv Turner is their head coach. Then again, can he be any worse in big games than Marty Ball?

Denver Broncos (9-7) This team could start off slow. Week 1 going into the Ralph will be a very good litmus test for the development of Jay Cutler. If he goes down like a sack of dirt, the defense isn't good enough this season to bail him out. The team was 7-5 last season and seemingly on their way to the playoffs before Cutler jumped in and ran the ship aground. Shanny is going to need to coach 'em up this season for them to make the playoffs and hopefully Champ Bailey isn't slowly losing a step.

Kansas City Chiefs (5-11) Larry Johnson set the record for most carries in a season in 2006. In my eyes, thats not a good stat to have. In a day and age where injures seem more calm, players are making huge jack and complain they aren't making enough jack, and players are coddled and cautiously used, 2006 for the Chiefs was the opposite. They let him pound the rock every chance they could. It may haunt them this season, well that and the quarterback play of Huard and Croyle. Lets just hope Casey Printers doesn't seen any action.

Oakland Raiders (3-13) Back to back #1 1st round picks seems unlikely but this team is just plain lost. The owner is more senile than Ralph Wilson, JaMarcus Russell is unsigned and the season starts in 3 days, and their coach has no experience. They could surprise, but it would probably be less surprising if they folded the team half way through the season.

Division Winners Patriots Bengals Colts Chargers

WC Ravens Broncos ( I didn't wanna be a homer and pick the Bills)

AFC Championship game Bengals v. Chargers Bengals

SuperBowl Bengals v. Eagles Eagles

Well writen, but I don't think either of your superbowl teams are even a lock to win thier divisions, let alone their confrences. but over all I like what I read. Now its time for me to rip you for not picking the steelers to do better. Not only will they do better than 8-8, but I think they will do better than the most overrated team in football (see Cincinnati Bungles) also. 8-8 to AFC champs without making any changes, I think not.

Uh, the Jets WRs are Coles and Cotchery, among the better tandems in the NFL. Both the Bills and the Dolphins will be worse than the Jets. The Jets are simply a better team. As for Pennington, he wins because he is an accurate passer. Ober his career he has rarely turned the ball over and, until last year, never in the red zone. Now, we all wish he had a little more zip on the ball and had more success throwing the long ball, but you make a game plan around the passes that the guy makes well. Get good medium route runners and Chad will put the ball where it has to be.

So do I. Philly would defeat Cincy in my opinion, but do you honestly think that anyone is going to make it past the Colts? Unless there's a severe injury, I'd say it'll take about 4 years for the Colts to be stopped.

I know I might be biased, but come on. How are the Patriots going to be 11-5? I honestly think they are going to be at least 12-4, possibley 13-3. I know, most of the players are getting older, but the wide receivers (Donte Stallworth and Randy Moss) are going to play big parts, since Brady usually gives them a lot of passes rather than rush yards. I don't know, we'll see what happens, I guess, especially since they could lose a couple of their first 3 games, since they have a tough schedule: Jets, Chargers, and Colts.

1) I can't believe you complain when they guy picks you to win the division because he has you losing 5 games and not 4. Classic.

2) I could see the Patriots losing to the following teams:

Jets, Chargers, Bengals, Cowboys, Colts, Eagles, Ravens, Steelers. Then there is the one surprise a year. Could be the Bills or Giants. Boom. They lose all the games and go 6-10. No, but seriously, it is not hard to imagine the Pats losing 5 if not six games. It is equally easy to imagine them winning 12, if not 13 games.

Its just some strange anomaly...i makes no sense, but it happens...the pats will never sweep their division because of it... Coincidently, the pats have a week 16 date with the phins...where the pats could be hypothetically 14-0...hmmm

Nah, the Pats are going to start off 0-2, then 1-3, then 2-4 before running off 6 straight wins, followed by a loss, followed by 3 wins to close the season. Still, it will be fun for the first 6 weeks to watch Patriots fans squirm.

Good point. But you need to win games in order to get to the playoffs. That's why the Pats, Ravens, Bengals, Colts, and the Chargers all have good squads, and will most likely make it to the playoffs, but come on. Who would you say has the most dominating offense? You'd probably say the Colts. If you have a decent defense (not the best defense), as well as have the best offense in the league, with the analysis of people getting older (which is why I believe the Pats will lose to the Colts in a very tight matchup), then you can still make it to the championship.

AFC is like the SEC of the NFL but better, Patriots, Colts and Chargers would all have a shot at going undefeated in the NFC my predictions for the final AFC standings go like this 1. Patriots(14-2) 2. Chargers (13-3) 3. Colts (12-4) 4. Bengals (12-4) 5. Ravens (10-6) 6. Jets (10-6)

First round 3 seeded Colts beat 6 seeded Jets 4 seeded Bengals beat 5 seeded Ravens (after finishing the season hot) Second Round 2 seeded Chargers squeeze past 3 seeded Colts 1 seeded Patriots squirm past red hot Bengals AFC Championship 1. Patriots beat 2. Chargers

Patriots go on to win the Super Bowl against the Seahawks

I actually like a Jets/Colts matchup fromt he Jets point of view. Man I remember watching the game last year when the Jets had the game wrapped up only for Peyton to be Peyton and find a way to win it. Only the Cleveland game where we got screwed by the officials was a more difficult loss to swallow.

Seahawks, Saints, Bears, Giants, Eagles, and Cowboys are all talked about being in the playoffs when the truth is that there are so many dominating teams in the AFC. I agree with you, they wouldn't stand a chance. Take one of the best teams in the AFC, and put them up against the best team in the NFC. 8 times out of the last 10 Superbowls, the AFC beat the NFC. They seem pretty dominating, and I think compare them to the AL and NL of the MLB right now.

ok your AFC East Preview sucks so bad. First of all, the Patriots DO have a tough sceduale but I'm thinking they ill about 13-14 games this season. They are clearly the best in the AFC even with some competition. I'm not saying they cant be beat, but they are clearly dominante. HOW CAN YOU PUT THE BILLS 2ND?!?! First of all, they have lost rather then gained players AND the division has improved so much from last year with Jets, Pats and Dolphins. I am in shock! Spikes happened to be great for the Bills. I think last year he recovered 2 fumbles in one game against the Pats (which is amazing since they didnt fumble very much). How can you say that. Now the Jets. They wll most certainly not have a losing record this year, MAYBE .500 but most likely a few games above. Hello? Did improvements after last year not say anything to you? I'm thinking They will be 3rd in the division this year. I get where you are coming from since they all cant be all a bove 500 for its not possible. The Dolphins will be the 2nd place team as the suprise in the East this year with my prediction of 10 wins. All they have done is upgrade. Trent Green looked spectacular in the preseason and threw for 4000+ yards multiple times before his last season with the skins s he split the season with Brunell. Ronnie Brown is a consistant runner who will pund the ball and as much as I hate to say it, the Dolphins are going to be good this year. I hate them. They have done many other things as well which I will not get into detail. The Bills, most likely, will win 1-2 games in the east. I'm thinking maybe a 4 win season offf the top of my head since I havnt seen their sceduale. They een lost Mcgahee (ecuse spelling, I'm not sure how to spell his name. Here is my prediction.

Pats: 13-3 (14-2?) Dolphins: 10-6 (9-7?) Jets:8-8 (9-7?) Bills: 5-11 (4-12?)

Sure, call me crazy with the Dolphins. But as a patriots fan, we know what they are capable of and the improvements the teams have made. I may comment later with something about the other predictions since I havnt seen them. I must say, it wasnt bad, I just have different beleifs and opinions. Nice effort, I would just reccommend a little more analysis. I would also suggest adding negatives to why you think that (like the Patriots!) or why you think they will win that many games (in this case, positive notes). Overall (with the part I read), not bad

Ok, the North looks like last years outcome overall. I think the Browns will be a a suprise as they have quietly hugely added to their team(check the depth charts) but asl do have the coach and QB problem. I also think the Bengals will be 9-7 or 8-8 this year, but are a very good team. OH! great job with the Ravens, I'm thinking 11 games they will win, but its very close! The South, the Colts are still a great team and I actually think Addai will be an upgrade to the running back position, but I still have qeustions about them. I think 11-5 is a good prediction. It is a wait and see kind of thing. The Titans will also be better then 8-8, maybe 10-6, a potential wild card winner. Vince Young throws about as many picks as TD's and doesnt have a good completeion percentage, but he has a good running game. I think Matt is for real on the Texans, they may win 6, 7 tops this season, but will consistantly get better. Sure, Merriman used steriods, but he's done his time and will only help the defense (which is much needed for SD). I know they have a pretty good D (about 5th overall or something?) but Merriman will be the run stopper and play maker on D if he plays all 16 games. I'm thinking a 13 win year this year. The Raiders, you made some good point, but I think they may win 4, 5 games tops this year. Rhodes is a huger improvement in my eyes to Oaks.
