The first Major League Baseball All-Star game to be played indoors took place at the Astrodome in Houston, TX.

Former Arsenal player Terry Neill is appointed manager of the club.

Pete Sampras of the United States set a record when he won the men's singles tennis championship at Wimbledon. It was his 13th Grand Slam title.

Pittsburgh Pirate Randall Simon clubs one of the Brewers/Klement's Racing Sausages (the Italian to be exact) over the head with a wooden bat, sending the costumed person to the ground and setting off a chain reaction that also collects the Hot Dog. Simon will later be cited for disorderly conduct and fined $432 for the incident.
