66,000 Attend MLS Game: They Got Every Penny's Worth

David Beckham made his first MLS start with the LA Beckhams in front of a record crowd of 66,000 at Giants Stadium against the New York Red Bulls. Beckham set up the first 2 goals......and uh......that was it for him quality wise. He started the full 90 minutes, and his team is STILL the only MLS team not to win on the road in an entertaining 5-4 loss against New York. I'm not here to talk about the game though, mainly because I didn't watch it (and also because the Seahawks got pasted tonight), but because it has nothing to do with this article.

I know that many people would interpret that magical spring in attendance as clear proof that US soccer is on the rise. I called your local hospitals and the tranquilizers are coming. It's great that 66,000 people witnessed an MLS game where both teams had this crazy objective to put a spherical ball into a net, but it's sad that had Beckham not been there, only 12,000 fans would've seen that. The worst part is that New York is the melting pot of culture here in the USA. Many immigrants from around the world go to the Big Apple, and you can't find 66,000 that are sort of interested in a soccer game?

So let it be known, although it's great that Beckham is boosting attendance, it's sad that no one would care if he or any other foreign star weren't there.

I've agreed with you about Beckham and the MLS and this whole thing being a publicity stunt. But you've got to admit that at the very least, there's been more publicity for the MLS than ever before, albeit Beckham centered publicity. And there's no such thing as bad publicity.
