5th Flyer Suspended; NHL Finally Speaks Up

21
Vote

by MetsJetsDevils

With 2:14 remaining in the Flyers 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars on Saturday, December 1, 2007, Flyers "enforcer" Riley Cote elbowed Stars rookie Matt Niskanen in the head.  Cote was given a match penalty meaning he would be automatically suspended pending league review.  Today the league suspended Cote 3 games for his actions.

However, the NHL did not end there.  In 25 games thus far the Flyers have managed to lose 52 games to suspensions to 5 different players, with Cote being the latest.  As a result of the latest incident, according to a report on ESPN.com the NHL warned the Flyers about any future altercations.  Although what the NHL informed the Flyers is unknown, GM Paul Holmgrem confirmed that commissioner Gary Bettman "raised [the] ramifications if it happens again."

While I commend the NHL for finally taking action, it is coming a little too late.  Many, myself included, believe that this warning should have come after Randy Jones dangerous hit on the Bruins Patrice Bergeron.  What likely saved the Flyers was the perception that Jones hit, while illegal, was not intentional.  The same can likely be said for Hartnell's ugly hit on the Bruins Andrew Alberts.  However, Cote's elbow, like Downie's illegal check and Boulerice stick assault were intentional acts done with the intent to injure the other player.  Only a quarter of the way into the season, the NHL could no longer swallow the argument that these were isolated incidents.

Each time a new Flyer gets suspended, I expect it to be the last.  if I were commissioner of the NHL I would make it clear that the next Flyer suspended will result in a lengthy suspension of coach John Stevens and a significant hit to the pockets of the organization.

I guess these guys don't mind getting suspended because playing hockey is just a hobby of theirs.

Well, it seems like this hobby is going to get very expensive if more and more suspensions are handed out.

I can't defend Cote. He deserves the suspension. But I don't like the Jones and Hartnell hits being included in the conversation. Hey, three legitimate suspendable hit is probably enough for the league to speak up, but I don't think it's fair to throw incidents 3 and 4 in the mix.

They are not in the conversation to the extent that they were not intentional acts. However, they are in the conversation in that whether intentional acts they were flagrant, illegal, and lead to significant injury. As isolated incidents no one would be talking about them the same way no one is talking about Ed Jovanoski's one game suspension. But they are not isolated incidents. They are part of the Flyers culture of playing at the edge (and often over the edge) of what the rules allow.

Those hits by themselves would be acceptable incidents invitable to the sport. But all the hits came from people wearing the same uniform, and then throw in the blatantly and ugly ones we've seen, then there's a pattern.

I've given up on denying the Flyers reputation, as a whole, as being dirty. I can see that, from the outside, it appears that there is an organizational mandate to play tough to the point of injury. But I implore every to not believe that. That's not defending any of the acts, but I'm almost positive the Flyers are not trying to hurt people. I can't make people see it my way though.

I agree to an extent. I feel as if once the Flyers F'd up for the second or third time, they became the whipping post for the NHL. If players can get fined for taking a dive, perhaps the team can get fined for the negative actions of its players anything past five incidents. (Here's to hoping the last five games of the season for a team don't turn into a murderous rampage.)

I bet the next incident results in a game forfeit. 5 is ridiculous! It's barely december! So yeah, I say forfeiture of games is the next step.

MJD- do they take into consideration that the score was 4-1 and only 2 or so minutes left???? That should be grounds for a higher number of games....

I believe they do Jamel. The NHL looks at incidents when the game is virtually over with more scrutiny than they would if the game was tied and for obvious reasons.

Check out this youtube video Riley made by himself of himself- something Manny would do-http://www.y...=iFT-OZWXC48

This should get him 5 games easy just for submitting such crap- only problem I have with hockey is that douchebags like this guy think they are cool because they are "enforcers"- this is what will and does ruin hockey in my books

Enforcers are meant to go after guys like the Flyers, in order to protect the star players (and goalie who can't really drop the gloves and fight someone, although it's been known to happen).

Every team has enforcers, so don't point to the Flyers and imply they are the only team using these tactics. Keep in mind that the Ducks won the Cup last year using a very rough style. And it's a very thin line between what they did, and what the flyers are doing. Really, the only difference with the exception of Boulerice (absolutely no excuse for using a stick as a weapon), is the flyers' victims are getting injured.

It's nice that the NHL is finally saying that there is a possibility that they might do something about this.

Possible punishments I think could be reasonably levied against the Flyers right now:

1. Loss of draft picks

2. Suspension of entire team staggered throughout the season, so like 2 players suspended for 2 games, then 2 more players for the next 2 games and so on.

3. Massive fine

4. Deduction of points

5. One ridiculously long suspension for the next player to play dirty. At least 50 games

6. Suspend the coaching staff

And why is it that the NHL needs to warn the Flyers to stop breaking the rules? Is Bettman gonna count to three but end up stopping at two and a half, two and three quarters, etc?

The NHL needs a Roger Goodell type of commisioner.

i think the jones hit should be included in the conversation. This is because when you play hockey as soon as you learn to check you are taught if i guy turns don't touch him. It is hard to do and many players find it difficult to stop but it is a rule in the game and it needs to be enforced not overlooked.

As soon as you learn hockey, you're also taught to not put yourself in a vulnerable position. Some responsibility has to lie with the person getting checked. Randy Jones can not know that Bergeron isn't going to go around behind the net and instead put on the brakes and turn his face to the boards. Too many players these days quickly put themselves in a vulnerable position along the boards because they know a hit will give their team a major power play. Very brave but not fair to blame the checker completely.

While I agree with your general assessment that Bergeron should have known better than to put himself in a vulnerable position, Jones had an enormous amount of time to react. It was not a bang bang play where Bergeron turned at the last minute. Jones lined him up when Bergeron had already turned. Bergeron should know better, but the fault lies completely with Jones.

bergeron showed his back wich made him off limits yes but did jones have that much time to react to the play? The Flyers are unfortunate to have a couple of guys who were to stupid to realize what they were doing at the time of doing it.Downey threw an illegal hit trying to make a squad Boulerice well who the hell knows what he was doing and Cote well(being a canadian and a hockey fan ive seen him play in many ahl games we get them on sportsnet up here) he is a complete idiot. The Nhl should most definatley give him a suspenion and maybe do something to the philly organization..after having so many repeat offenders something has to echo through the dressing room or is this something the organization wants on there rap sheet

There's an obvious reason the flyers won't get too much flack... They're a big part of the NHL success...the NHL needs teams like the rangers, Flyers, Bruins, Red Wings, Avalanche, Canadiens, blackhawks, etc etc to be good...more teams like Anaheim and Ottawa are gonna kill the fans...

and whadda ya want me to say...its some bad hits...Its nice to see them get real physical...but shit at the end of games doesn't do much...

you wanna beat the living crap out of your opponents, that's fine...I think the bergeron thing was totally bogus and the bruins are being babies...but as far as Alberts and Niskanen, i get it...

The flyers do have a few of those guys on their team...but i think you can see the point...they're meant to be hitting...(i don't think jones is one of those guys though)

I think a forfeit is a bit extreme. Perhaps you can do something like soccer, whereby the team plays down one player for the remainder of the game. I think I'd rather see the Flyers get beat down then have to forfeit.

When are people going to realize this: professional sports teams will not have to forfeit a game. There wasn't a chance it was going to happen to the Patriots in the NFL, and there's not a chance it happens to the Flyers in the NHL. And keep in mind, the punishment has to fit into the rules of the collective bargaining agreement. And i'm pretty sure that eliminates a lot of the extreme options that have been brought up.
