36 Innings of Awesomeness

Wow.

Wow, wow, wow.

That's the only way I can describe the first four games of the 2007 New York Mets. 4-0. 31 runs in 36 innings -- while giving up only 3. It's hard to say which of Tom Glavine, El Duque, John Maine, and O.P. were the best. And we were all expecting the worst.

I realize, it's only four games. Mets batters are hitting a ridiculous .311/.375/.453. Opposing batters are being held to an Ordonezian .198/.260/.289. It seems that the Mets have nowhere to go but down, right? Well, check this out:

  • Carlos Delgado has three hits and four total bases. Jose Valentin is worse, with 2 hits and 3 TB.
  • As a team, the Mets have a mere 3 homers.
  • Jose Reyes has only one stolen base -- and one caught stealing.

Okay, you're right -- the Mets have basically no room for improvement. Man, this is awesome!

I saw on Sportscenter that this is the best start for a NL team since like 1887, going 4-0 and beating their opponents by 28 runs.

I hope they win today! If they can sweep the braves and win 2-3 from the Phillies. THe Mets would be in awesome shape!

The Mets' BABIP this year is .352. Last year it was .296.

Mets' opponents' BABIP this year is .200. Last year it was .275.

And yes, I'm raining on your parade.

Wait, the Mets are playing so well, they can't keep it up? Really? :)

Seriously, though -- let's say that the Mets offense falls off 2.75 runs per game, and their opponents come up 2.75 runs per game. So instead of the Mets averaging a 7.75 to 0.75 game, they average a 5 run to 3.50 run game.

Pythag it out, and they'll win 110.

The Mets are playing incredibly good right now.

True, they are playing very well... If you regress their BABIP to last year's level, they score 5.05 RPG this year. If you regress their opponents, they allow 3.06 RPG. So that's actually 116 wins, even when their BABIP catches up to them!

Well done to the Mets. Talk of an unbeaten season already!

Extrapolating a 162 game season from a 4 game streak is pointless. Flip a coin 4 times and it may come up all heads. But to then say that you'll achieve 110/162 heads because of that isn't valid. At least get a 10% sample size (16.2 games).

I think Dan as much as acknowledged that; he's just super-excited about the Mets right now. Don't worry, though, we won't be after they lose to Atlanta this afternoon... :)

I know. Hey, I'm excited about baseball since the Rox are 3-1 and in first place and on a 3-0 winning streak. But, then I remind myself of the last 13 seasons and resume to watch something else on TV.

Hey, I don't think they're going to be that bad this year.

No one thinks they (the Rox) will be that bad, but then they live below all expectations and surprise with their lack of win-ability, especially after the All-Star game. I call it the "Rock Slide"

All I know is that Ortiz is good to go, Boof is replacing Radke, Silva won't suck the entire season(just almost the entire season) and Ponson/Perkins/Garza will be good enough. Rondell White is showing he's worth an extension, Hunter's playing like it's a contract year, and the M&M boys are playing as good as they can this early

Rondell White worth an EXTENSION? Isn't he Julio Franco old?

he got a one year extension, and has been a good asset in the field so far. His bat hasn't been very hot so far, but he's doing better each game. He's got a bit of a hamstring issue right now, but if he's healthy, he should produce

that over the season would balance out. I'd expect .250 20 HR's and 80 RBI

Here's how the major projection systems see White doing in 2007:
System	AB	H	2B	3B	HR	R	RBI	BB	SB	CS	AVG	OBP	SLG
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B.James	322	87	16	1	10	40	43	17	1	1	0.270	0.307	0.419
CHONE	379	102	20	2	12	41	47	20	1	1	0.269	0.306	0.427
Marcel	387	105	21	2	12	51	51	23	2	1	0.271	0.312	0.429
ZiPS	325	85	18	1	8	42	41	16	0	0	0.262	0.296	0.397
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not sure I'd count on him for .250-20-80...

.250-20-60 for sure. 10 of the extra RBI's are from the Homer perspective, and 10 are if he has a good season like I imagine he will

I'll settle on .270-14-50, with some kind of injury that causes him to miss the customary 65 games. It's better than last year, at least.

thats where we differ. I'd agree on that if he misses 65 games, he'd have that stat line, but I only count on him missing 10-20 games
