2008 NFL Draft
Contents |
The 2008 NFL Draft will take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on April 26 and 27, 2008. For the 29th consecutive year, the draft will be televised on ESPN and ESPN2; the NFL Network will also broadcast coverage of the event, its third year doing so. The 2008 Draft is currently scheduled to have 254 draft selections: 222 regular selections in rounds one through seven (two selections were exercised in the 2007 NFL Supplemental Draft), plus 32 compensatory selections, distributed among rounds three through seven. ("Selection" is the official NFL term, although the more commonly-used term is "picks.") This will be the second draft presided over by current NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
For the first time, two rounds will take place during the first day (compared to three in previous years), and the draft will start at 3:00 p.m. ET (compared to noon in previous years). Limits in the amount of time a team has to make a selection have also changed: the first round has been reduced to ten minutes (from fifteen) and the second round was reduced from ten minutes to seven. The second day will begin at 10:00 a.m. ET, with no changes to the selection time limit (five minutes).

Notes (based on NFL.com):
- Except for Super Bowl teams (who receive the final two picks), the draft order is determined by win-loss record. Where there are ties, a complicated set of tie-breakers is used to determine the draft order within that group of teams. For playoff teams, whomever advances further has a lower draft order.
- The Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs, and Oakland Raiders finished with the same strength-of-schedule in the 2007 season. Since Kansas City finished third in the AFC West Division and the Raiders fourth (the tie was broken on the basis of record in common games), the Raiders will draft ahead of the Chiefs. Atlanta and Oakland will flip a coin for the third position at the NFL Combine in February. As Atlanta won the coin toss, the Falcons will draft third, the Raiders fourth, and the Chiefs fifth.
