Coach Jack Del Rio put the speculation to rest, naming Byron Leftwich his starter early in the offseason. But you have to think he'll be on a short leash with talented backups David Garrard and Quinn Gray anxious to get playing time. Leftwich missed the last 10 games of the season because of an ankle injury. There was a chance he could play late in the year, but the Jags opted to stick with Garrard and Gray. When healthy, Leftwich threw for fewer than 200 yards in three of six games and finished with nine total touchdowns and five interceptions. For his career, Leftwich averages 15 total TDs a season and hasn't thrown for more than 3,000 yards in any season. He has a strong arm and is fairly accurate. And Leftwich isn't too fast but can make plays with his feet if needed, scoring two rushing touchdowns in every NFL season.
Leftwich has some touchdown potential, but his yardage numbers won't be great in the Jags run-heavy offense. And you have to worry about one of the backups getting work if Leftwich has any struggles. So Leftwich isn't a great draft pick, but could surprise and be a steal if you get him late enough.
