Schedule Breakdown Part 1 of 8: AFC East

Welcome to the first part of my eight part series, the schedule breakdown. It's pretty much what I say it is. I take a team and post their schedule and say if they win or not. Let's start.

New England Patriots

Last Year: Division- 1st , Conference- 4th (10-6)

  • Week 1: vs. Buffalo Bills- W
  • Week 2: @ New York Jets- W
  • Week 3: vs. Denver Broncos- W
  • Week 4: @ Cincinnati Bengals- L
  • Week 5: vs. Miami Dolphins- L
  • Week 6: Bye (Record at Bye: 3-2)
  • Week 7: @ Buffalo Bills- W
  • Week 8: @ Minnesota Vikings- W
  • Week 9: vs. Indianapolis Colts- L
  • Week 10: vs. New York Jets- W
  • Week 11: @ Green Bay Packers- W
  • Week 12: vs. Chicago Bears- W
  • Week 13: vs. Detroit Lions- W
  • Week 14: @ Miami Dolphins- L
  • Week 15: vs. Houston Texans- W
  • Week 16: @ Jacksonville Jaguars- W
  • Week 17: @ Tennessee Titans- W

Final Record: 12-4

Analysis: The Patriots will have a better record than last year due to the teams they play from lackluster divisions such as the AFC South and NFC North. I have them losing both games to Miami, which may surprise some people but I honestly believe Miami's offense will be too much for New England to handle.

Miami Dolphins

Last Year: Division- 2nd, Conference- 9th (9-7)

  • Week 1: @ Pittsburgh Steelers- L
  • Week 2: vs. Buffalo Bills- W
  • Week 3: vs. Tennessee Titans- W
  • Week 4: @ Houston Texans- W
  • Week 5: @ New England Patriots- W
  • Week 6: @ New York Jets- W
  • Week 7: vs. Green Bay Packers- W
  • Week 8: Bye (Record at Bye: 6-1)
  • Week 9: @ Chicago Bears- W
  • Week 10: vs. Kansas City Chiefs- W
  • Week 11: vs. Minnesota Vikings- W
  • Week 12: @ Detroit Lions- W
  • Week 13: vs. Jacksonville Jaguars- W
  • Week 14: vs. New England Patriots- W
  • Week 15: @ Buffalo Bills- L
  • Week 16: vs. New York Jets- W
  • Week 17: @ Indianapolis Colts- L

Final Record: 13-3

Analysis: Yes, that's right the Jets fan himself predicts the Dolphins to go a whopping 13-3! I have them losing to the Bills in an upset due to overconfidence. I have them going on a 12 game win streak at one point, completely blowing over their opponents. Miami will be a tough team to stop this upcoming season.

Buffalo Bills

Last Year: Division- 3rd, Conference- 12th (5-11)

  • Week 1: @ New England Patriots- L
  • Week 2: @ Miami Dolphins- L
  • Week 3: vs. New York Jets- W
  • Week 4: vs. Minnesota Vikings- W
  • Week 5: @ Chicago Bears- L
  • Week 6: @ Detroit Lions- W
  • Week 7: vs. New England Patriots- L
  • Week 8: Bye (Record at Bye: 3-4)
  • Week 9: vs. Green Bay Packers- W
  • Week 10: @ Indianapolis Colts- L
  • Week 11: @ Houston Texans- L
  • Week 12: vs. Jacksonville Jaguars- L
  • Week 13: vs. San Diego Chargers- L
  • Week 14: @ New York Jets- L
  • Week 15: vs. Miami Dolphins- W
  • Week 16: vs. Tennessee Titans- L
  • Week 17: @ Baltimore Ravens- L

Final Record: 5-11

Analysis: The Bills will get out to a .500 start the first eight games but then start to slide as the team shows it's weaknesses such as it's offensive line and a weak receiving core. The Bills will have a breakdown at the end of the year, only winning one of their final eight games.

New York Jets

Last Year: Division- 4th, Conference- 13th (4-12)

  • Week 1: @ Tennessee Titans- W
  • Week 2: vs. New England Patriots- L
  • Week 3: @ Buffalo Bills- L
  • Week 4: vs. Indianapolis Colts- L
  • Week 5: @ Jacksonville Jaguars- L
  • Week 6: vs. Miami Dolphins- L
  • Week 7: vs. Detroit Lions- W
  • Week 8: @ Cleveland Browns- L
  • Week 9: Bye (Record at Bye: 2-6)
  • Week 10: @ New England Patriots- L
  • Week 11: vs. Chicago Bears- L
  • Week 12: vs. Houston Texans- W
  • Week 13: @ Green Bay Packers- L
  • Week 14: vs. Buffalo Bills- W
  • Week 15: @ Minnesota Vikings- L
  • Week 16: @ Miami Dolphins- L
  • Week 17: vs. Oakland Raiders- L

Final Record: 4-12

Analysis: The Jets are in a rebuilding mode with a new head coach. They won't do much of anything this year. There is still a QB controversy and rookie Clemens will probably be getting the snaps by the end of the year. This is the year the Jets will give their rookies some chances.

Final Standings

So here are the final AFC East Standings as I see fit.

  1. Miami Dolphins 13-3
  2. New England Patriots 12-4
  3. Buffalo Bills 5-11
  4. New York Jets 4-12

Who found the time machine that's allowing the 1972 Dolphins to play this year?

Um, the Dolphins at 13-3? You been hanging with Ricky a little too long if you think the Dolphins are going 13-3!

Don't agree with the Dolphins pick, but I like the prediction nonetheless. The Dolphins have a good coach and some momentum. If Daunte plays really well, they could overtake the Pats, conceivably, with all the changes on their roster. However, I find it hard to predict the Dolphins to beat the Patriots envisioning scenarios where Brady vs. Culpepper would play out in the final quarter. Culpepper is the epitomy of putting up yards, but blowing games with turnovers (fumbles more than anybody in the NFL EVER). Brady is the steady hand who guides his team to victory. Sucks to admit, but this is the Patriots division for another year.

Though I clearly have some bias as a Patriots fan, I think that my reasons that the Dolphins will NOT win the AFC East are objective. First, their defense is aging fast. They didn't really do anything to improve the run defense, which was a meager 17th and is only getting only. Their pass defense was 20th, and though that has arguably improved, the truth is that they only mixed up the players, and no one can know whether or no the secondary will actually be any better than last year. Next, Daunte Culpepper is coming off of a serious injury to his legs, which are a bigger part of his game than with some QBs. If he plays better than he did before the injury, we can expect a good Culpepper-Chambers combination. However, I don't think that this will happen. Ronnie Brown is clearly a plus for this team, but he will need to show that he can consistently be the #1 guy, and especially that he can behind the Fins' average offensive line. Finally, an injury to Brown or a key defensive player could send this team into turmoil, as the Dolphins do not have very good depth on defense (at most positions) or at RB. Too many things need to not go wrong for the Dolphins to win the AFC East, and I'm just not convinced. They will be legimate challengers soon, but this is clearly not the year.
