Some say that NCAA football is a glorified NFL minor league. Others think that the college game is the pure sport, with the NFL more a business than a sport.
But we can all agree on one thing: talent-wise, the NFL is better.
So, we wondered, what if there was no NFL? What if, instead, players "graduated" to super-teams, comprised of the best talent each school provided? There'd be about a dozen teams -- one for each Division I-A conference and one "catch-all" for Div I-AA and Independents. Would the Big East still be considered a powerhouse? Would the Div I-AA/Indy conference be competitive? Which BCS conference would reign supreme?
To answer these questions, we set up a tournament. There are three brackets, named for the automatic bids that the BCS conferences have. For example, the Pac-10 and Big 10 are in the "Rose Bracket." We also tried to keep smaller conferences aligned with their typical big-conference rivals (to use the term loosely). Oh, and we used the school's current affiliation, not the one at the time the guy left school. So Miami is in the ACC.
The winner of each of the 3 bracket will go to the Alumni Bowl Championship Series -- the ABCS of football. To fill the 4th spot in the ABCS, we're adding the best team that didn't make the ABCS in the natural, fair way. We figure any college tourney needs something like this, no? "Best" is defines as "came closest to winning its bracket's finals," on a percentage basis, in case you care.
The result of each matchup will be decided by user vote. Click on "See Teams and Vote" for each matchup, and add a comment stating which team you think would win. You can even propose a final score, or other editorial comments (e.g. "in a blowout," "by a mile," "in triple overtime on a Michael Vick fumble.")
Remember, votes by registered users count three times as much as those by anonymous fanatics, so go register if you haven't already. Second Round Voting has begun.
Good luck, and may the best conference win!
