2006 MLB Wrap-Up - The "Fringe" Categories (Offense)

15
Vote

by user The shark With the 2006 MLB regular season behind us, it is time for a little reflection on the year that was. With a twist.

Everyone knows that Philadelphia's Ryan Howard smashed 58 home runs. And that Minnesota's Joe Mauer became the only catcher ever to win an AL Batting Crown (.347). It has also been well-publicized that Jose Reyes led both leagues in stolen bases with 64.

But who struck out the most? Who got hit by the most pitches? And who led baseball in OPS? Those are the real questions. And it's those questions that I'm here to answer.

Gee, that's weird -- I consider OBP, OPS, and pitches seen to be categories of vital importance, and batting average and stolen bases to be fringe...

Agreed. But most media outlets are hesitant to share those vital categories, unlike steals, avg, etc. That's why I posted them here for peoples' perusal.

Stats - If your Grandpop knows them, they're not fringe

Gotcha. My comment wasn't intended as a knock on the article anyway, more like a knee-jerk sabermetrician's response to the mere suggestion that OPS wasn't the be-all and end-all of stats. :)

Who had suffered the most bee stings? Who issued the most hotfeet? Who was struck in the jewlz the most times this season?

Michael Barrett definitely had the worst injury I can possibly imagine of the season. Which is kind of related to the "being hit hardest in the jewels" fringe stat...

Too bad Hafner got injured and couldn't play the final month. He had a hell of a year.

Hmmm...Granderson the most Ks? Not the best stat to have as a leadoff man.

I still think Carl Crawford is the best all-around offensive player in MLB. .305-18-77 with 16 triples, 58 steals, great baserunning ability, willingness to move a runner over, etc. He gets no credit because he plays in Tampa and gets no help. How else do you explain a guy with that many triples and steals, in addition to 183 hits, only scoring 89 runs? If Crawford is first, Sizemore is a close second.

Barry Bonds may have won the OBP title. He didn't qualify -- he's short about 9 PA -- but the rule for BA is to simply add 9 empty AB to the player's line. If you do that for OBP also, Bonds wins.

Even with fringe numbers, Pujols is MVP.

I agree. Pujols is the MVP. Where would the Cardinals be without him? The same place Ryan Howard and the Phillies presently find themselves.
