2006 MLB Award Wrap-up: MVP

16
Vote

by user Timothy Moreland(Bball3345)

Over the final weeks of the season, I will be taking a look at each of the awards in-depth. For each, I will share three segments. First, my preseason picks. Second, my own ballot. Third, who I think will take the hardware home.

Preseason Predictions

AL MVP: Alex Rodriguez

NL MVP: Albert Pujols

AL MVP: Well, I thought ARod would follow-up his MVP 2005 season with another MVP award. Unfortunately, he is having his worst overall season since 1997. This is not to say he has been bad, which his 30 HRs/100 R/ 100 RBI numbers show otherwise, but he has not had his usual Hall-of-Fame caliber year.

NL MVP: Again, I picked 2005's MVP. How could you ever vote agaist Pujols or ARod coming into the year? Despite missing a couple weeks with an oblique injury, Pujols again has shown himself to be the heir to Barry Bonds as the best hitter in the game. Imagine how much MVP hardware Pujols would own if he hadn't been playing in the same league as Bonds since 2001.

AL MVP
  1. Derek Jeter .423 OBP
  2. Travis Hafner .659 SLG
  3. Joe Mauer .348 AVG
  4. Jermaine Dye 1.026 OPS
  5. Grady Sizemore 50 2B/ 11 3B
  6. David Ortiz 48 HR
  7. Miguel Tejada .327 AVG
  8. Manny Ramirez .436 OBP
  9. Johan Santana AL Triple Crown
  10. Justin Morneau 120 RBI

Yes, I still have Jeter first. Jeter places among the top ten overall offensive players this season, before considering his position. American league shortstops have combined for a line of .281/.334/.415. On the other hand, AL 1Bmen hit .277/.350/.464 and DHs .264/.349/.470. Having a SS like Jeter (.346/.423/.492) gives the Yankees a substantial advantage over opponents. As well, Jeter is among the best baserunners in the game, stealing 29 bases in 32 attempts.

Hafner is by far the best hitter in the American League. Unfortunately, a broken hand forced a premature ending to his season. He will more than likely drop down my ballot by the end of the season.

After being threatened for not having Dye in my top five last edition, his career year jumps him to number four on my ballot.

Johan Santana stands a good shot at winning the AL Pitching Triple Crown. His third straight Hall-of-Fame caliber season squeeks him in ahead of Thome. Thome has a slight edge in offense, but Morneau's defense at first places him ahead of Thome.

NL MVP
  1. Albert Pujols 1.102 OPS
  2. Carlos Beltran .617 SLG
  3. Miguel Cabrera 48 2B
  4. Ryan Howard 56 HR
  5. Alfonso Soriano 45 HR/ 39 SB
  6. Lance Berkman 120 RBI
  7. David Wright 110 RBI
  8. Chase Utley 116 R
  9. Nick Johnson .434 OBP
  10. Jose Reyes 57 SB

This is truly a three-man race in my book. There is a clear dropoff to Howard for one reason: the top three play a defensive position well. Howard would be better served playing DH instead of standing at first. I will admit, however, Howard is the best hitter in the league, behind Pujols.

After a down year, Beltran has put together a tremendous year at the plate, on the bases, and in the field. He has shown the play New York paid for.

At just 23-years-old, Cabrera keeps getting better. His OBP this year stands at a whopping .430. His HR numbers have dropped a tad, but an increase in doubles has led to an increased SLG.

Oh, and Mets fans, that's three, count 'em, three players in the top ten. Please, no complaining ;)

Now for my predicted winners...

And The Winners Are...

AL MVP: Derek Jeter

NL MVP: Ryan Howard

The AL MVP will more than likely have a large split between Ortiz, Dye, Morneau, and Jeter. My guess is Jeter barely edges out Ortiz for the award.

The NL MVP looks like a two-man race in the media with Howard winning by a considerable margin. As great a hitter as Howard is, Pujols remains the BEST hitter in the league and plays the same defensive position significantly better.

So, that's my wrap-up on MVP. Sometime soon I will take a similar look at the Cy Young Award.

Call me biased, but I'm in the Beltran camp. His defense in CF is distinct compared to that of Pujols at 1B (who is good there) and Cabrera at 3B (who isn't really). Beltran may be the best defensive CF in the NL, and that in and of itself is worth a lot more wins than any 1B's defense could ever be worth.

I want to be in the Beltran camp too, but I'm not even sure he's the MVP of the team

I couldn't agree more. I think that Wright and Beltran will get more votes than Reyes, but I think Reyes is the MVP of the Mets. All that said, if the Phils make the playoffs, the MVP will be Howard.

I agree, if the Phils make the playoffs, which i don't see happening, then Howard will be the hands-down MVP. I think he will win it regardless, however.

Howard gets my NL vote, and Reyes would definitely be in the top 4...over beltran in fact.

"I know I will take grief for not including Morneau, but he would have been the fourth DH on the list" Morneau is a 1B, not DH. Not that I'm complaining about Santana being in your top ten, but just a correction.

Yeah, my bad. That was a stupid mistake on my part. Morneau was in my Top 10 until right before I posted this, so that comment was thrown in at the end, apparently without enough thought.

I actually revised my Top 10. Morneau is now #10. I had forgotten he played first base when deciding between him and Thome in the final minutes of editing. Sorry White Sox fans.

In a sense, I'm glad Hafner broke his hand so I can stop wasting my breath arguing for him. See you next year.

Heres how Pujols verse Howard

AVG RS H HR RBI TB BB SO OBP SLG Pujols .321 106 152 45 120 318 83 43 .425 .622 Howard .316 96 166 56 139 357 86 158 .413 .686

So the numbers are very similar besides the strike-outs. Yes Pujols missed time but its not Howard's fault that he is able to stay healthy and Pujols is not. Also Howard is carrying the team more then Pujols because Pujols has an almost automatic win every 5 days with Carpenter pitching. I believe that Howard will win the MVP and is the rightful winner to boot, but only barely.

What about defense? You have to admit Pujols has the edge there. Also, why should Pujols be hurt for having a better team? Is it Pujols fault? Why should Howard get a bonus because Phillies' front office couldn't put together a better team?

Let's be honest about the defense part. Did Barry Bonds play at Gold Glove level from 2001-04, when he won the MVP four times in a row? Of course not. But did he deserve it? Unarguably, yes.

Howard is having an all time great season. Any time a guy flirts with 60 HRs, he is having an all time great season. 72 is a steroid number. 61 is still the only record not in question. If Howard breaks that or ties it or even gets close while clean, he had an all time great season.

Dude, Howard may not be a gold glove at 1B this year, BUT HE IS NOT A BUTCHER EITHER. He has a .998 fielding %. That is not brutal. Honestly, your bias against Howard is getting REAL OLD, real fast. It is nice, however, to see you moving him in the top 3, since before, you didn't even have in the top 5.

I don't have a bias against Howard. I think, and wrote, he is the best hitter in the NL besides Pujols. I do however go for Gold-Glove centerfielders with big bats over firstbasemen with below average gloves.

I truly can't beleive how off these predictions are. Jeter and Mauer over Ortiz, Morneau, and Dye? The latter three have absolutely crushed Jeter and Mauer in almost every meaningful statistic. And having Howard behind Cabrera and Beltran? He's been a one-man show ever since August! The only argument against him would be Pujols.

Exactly my point. All 1Bman can hit, but not as many centerfielders (or SS, for that matter) can. This is why a middle-infielder with a big bat is more "valuable" than a 1Bman. Offensive-minded players at these "defensive" positions are rarer to find.

sorry to say but u are a idiot. Morneau is the best hitter in the games and the 2nd half he proves himself. By the way who is leading in 2-out RBI, Morneau is 1st and his teamate cuddyer is next ahead of ortiz. He is one his way to a 35+ hr and 130+ rbi not to mention his batting average at .324. He is also the 2nd best clutch hitter behing ortiz. Has won so many games for the twins. I believe that if mauer stays ahead of jeter, jeter should have not shot. This will split up the votes with the twins all haveing morneau, mauer and c young pitcher johan santana.Bottom line morneau should win it but his teamates may take some of his votes. When they clinched the playoff berth the whole team chanted morneau for MVP and he should win it. who is the only player with a .300+ ba, 30+ hr and 130+ rbi's. last time i checked there was only one guy and that guy should win the mvp!!not to mention he is a above average 1st baseman.

MLB measures knockouts (KO's) now? If that's the case Nolan Ryan should dominate that category, Pedro gets a vote too. I didn't know that was a stat. Most people call them K's if referring to the 50 for Albert and the 180 for Ryan. Pujols should have the MVP regardless, because not only did he have insane stats but he also missed nearly 20 games to injury. Add those games in with his averages and the man destroys Howard.
