2006 MLB Award Wrap-up: Cy Young

by user Timothy Moreland(Bball3345)

Over the final weeks of the season, I will be taking a look at each of the awards in-depth. For each, I will share three segments. First, my preseason picks. Second, my own ballot. Third, who I think will take the hardware home.

Here it is (Derek Jeter-free)...

2006 MLB Award Wrap-up: MVP

Preseason Predictions

AL CY: Johan Santana

NL CY: Jake Peavy

AL CY:

Well, it doesn't take a genius to pick Santana for Cy Young. He will probably be the favorite for many years to come. Although, his teammate Liriano looks to be stiff competition along with perennial contender Roy Halladay.

NL CY:

Peavy looked like a good guess coming into the season In 2004, he posted a 2.27 ERA and a 2.88 ERA last year with 216 strikeouts. Most likely due to elbow problems, Peavy's ERA ballooned above 4.00 this season. He has had a good finish to the season, as his ERA in the last ten starts is below 3.00. Maybe next year on this pick.

AL Cy Young
  1. Johan Santana
  2. Roy Halladay
  3. Justin Verlander
  4. Chien-Ming Wang
  5. Francisco Liriano
  6. C.C. Sabathia
  7. Erik Bedard
  8. Francisco Rodriguez
  9. Jonathon Papelbon
  10. Barry Zito

Easy, easy pick with Santana. He looks headed for a Triple Crown. Halladay established himself as the clear number two guy in the race. After the top guys, there is a swarm of arms deserving of a spot in the top ten. Francisco Rodriguez recently passed Papelbon as the most valuable reliever in the AL. Notice Mazzone pupil, Erik Bedard, on the list. He has a 2.68 ERA after the All-Star break. It is quite possible Mazzone's wisdom is wearing off on the "youngster."

NL Cy Young
  1. Chris Carpenter
  2. Brandon Webb
  3. Roy Oswalt
  4. Bronson Arroyo
  5. John Smoltz
  6. Carlos Zambrano
  7. Jason Jennings
  8. Jason Schmidt
  9. Chris Capuano
  10. Derek Lowe

It was a much closer race between Carpenter and Webb than Santana and Halladay. As of now, Carpenter has to get the edge. It's nice to see a Rockie on the list with Jason Jennings. Although scoring at Coors is down, a 3.65 ERA remains impressive.

Now for my predicted winners...

And The Winners Are...

AL CY: Johan Santana

NL CY: Brandon Webb

Carpenter has the lower ERA, but the voters may look at the wins come the end of the year and see Webb in front. There was no excuse for Santana not winning last year, and there is no excuse for him not winning this year.

OK, no arguments on your Cy picks (wins shouldn't mean anything, but we are talking about BBWAA 'voters'), but I think Jeter should have at least come in second!
