1999 Atlanta Braves
The 1999 Atlanta Braves won 103 games, and polished off their 8th straight NL East title by holding off a stubborn New York Mets team in the final month of the regular season. In the playoffs, Atlanta defeated the Houston Astros 3-1 in the NLDS (including an epic, 12-inning victory in Game 3), and outlasted the Mets 4-2 in the NLCS, a series which featured an "instant classic" of its own, a 15-inning war of attrition at Shea Stadium that ended when Robin Ventura hit a "grand slam single". Nonetheless, the Braves eliminated the Mets with an extra-innings win in Game 6, and would face the New York Yankees in the World Series. In the Series, the Yankees would make short work of Atlanta, sweeping them en route to their third championship in four years, and their second in a row. It was the Braves' fifth World Series berth since 1991, and their fourth loss. In retrospect, the 1999 Atlanta Braves would be the last Braves team to reach the World Series during their 1991-2005 dynasty.
