The Cincinnati Bengals posted a 9-7 regular-season record to win the AFC Central Division and move into the playoffs, where they defeated the Houston Oilers, 41-14, before losing to the Los Angeles Raiders, 20-10, in the second round.
Quarterback Boomer Esiason established a franchise record for most passing yards in a game when he threw for 490 yards in Cincinnati's 34-31 overtime victory over the Rams in Los Angeles on October 7.
