1989 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1989 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament was played through April 3, 1989. The Final Four took place in the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington. The University of Michigan, coached by Steve Fischer, won its first and only national championship to date.
Glen Rice averaged 33 minutes per game in the 1989 season for the Wolverines in 37 games averaging 25.6 points per game. He led the team in points (949), 3PT FG's made, attempted, and percentage (99, 192, 51.6%), FG's made and attempted (363, 629), and FT's made and percentage (124, 83.2%). In addition, he was second on the team in FT's attempted (149), offensive and defensive rebounds (77, 155, 232 total), steals (39), and blocks (11).
During the tournament, most people were impressed with Rice's prowess behind the arc, making a tournament record 27 three pointers in 6 games. He also holds the records for most points scored by an individual ever in an NCAA tournament with 184 as well as most field goals made with 75.
During the Final Four, the national semifinals matched up the winners of the East and West regions, and the Southeast and Midwest regions.
