The 1970 World Series was between the Cincinnati Reds and the Baltimore Orioles, with the Orioles winning in five games. In this series Emmett Ashford became the first African American to umpire in the Fall Classic. It also featured the first World Series games to be played on artificial turf, as Games 1 and 2 took place at Cincinnati's brand-new Riverfront Stadium. In Game 1, when Ty Cline hit the ball straight high, Elrod Hendricks caught it as well as tagging Bernie Carbo at the plate with his empty glove as Carbo missed the plate. Carbo was called out. Reds manager Sparky Anderson ran out of the dugout and argued with umpire Ken Burkhart about the controversial tag.
