The American League Expansion Draft was held on October 15, 1968, in New York. The two AL expansion teams, the Kansas City Royals and Seattle Pilots, each picked thirty players from a pool list supplied by the existing American League teams. The Pilots won the coin flip, and selected with their first pick first baseman Don Mincher from the California Angels.

[edit] Spring Training and Pre-Season Predictions
The 1969 season marked the first with two divisions in each league. Both expansion teams were placed in the West Division, playing alongside the Oakland A's, Minnesota Twins, California Angels and Chicago White Sox. The Pilots were picked to finish fifth in the division ahead of their co-expansion Kansas City Royals. The team will be managed by former St. Louis Cardinals coach Joe Schultz, who will be making his major league managerial debut.

[edit] Opening Day
Opening Day for the Pilots was on Tuesday, April 8th vs. the California Angels in California. Angels starter Jim McGlothlin faced seven batters in the first inning, allowing four runs on four hits. The first four Pilots batters reached base, Tommy Harper doubled, Mike Hegan homered, Tommy Davis singled and Don Mincher was hit by a pitch. After a Rich Rollins flyout, Jim Gosger walked to load the bases, and Jerry McNertney followed with a two run single, knocking out McGlothlin. Clyde Wright relieved, and after issuing a walk to Ray Oyler, retired the final two batters. So, the line score for the first inning in Pilots history was, 4 runs, 4hits, two walks, one hit batter, the bases left loaded and ten men sent to the plate. The Angels scored single runs in the second, fifth and ninth innings but it wasn't enough as the Pilots hung on for a 4-3 win. Starter Marty Pattin went five innings for the win, with Jack Aker picking up a save.
The Pilots Home Opener was played on April 11th in front of 14,993 at Sick's Stadium against the Chicago White Sox. The pitching matchup was Gary Bell for the Pilots vs ChiSox ace Joel Horlen, with Bell pitching a complete game shutout in a 7-0 win. For the Pilots, Tommy Harper, Rich Rollins and Jerry McNertney each had two hits, Mike Hegan walked three times and Don Mincher chipped in a two run homer.
