The Phillies Collapse Was Worse

The 2007 Mets' Swoon Was Not As Bad As the 1964 Phillies' Meltdown

© Harold Friend

Oct 2, 2007

Over a seven day period, the Phillies lost a 6 1/2 game lead and trailed the first place Reds by one full game. That was more extreme than the 2007 Mets' collapse.

At the end of play on September 20, 1964, the Phillies led both the Cardinals and Reds, who were tied for second place, by 6 ½ games. At the end of play on September 27, the Reds led the second place Phillies by a full game. In seven days, the Phillies lost a 6-½ game lead and were never again in first place.

I agree with Lou on this...

I mean, they lost a 6.5 game lead in 7 days...at the end of the season...

But, with the scrunity on NY...I guess the "magnitude" of the collapse was greater...

Plus, that mets team was kinda stacked...

Lou definitely is right...a ten game skid to cough up a lead in a time where there was no divisions, there was no wild card...you won the pennant or bust...Gene Mauch aged 15 years that last two weeks of 64. You look at this being worse a) because you probably are a Mets fan, b) you don't comprehend history of the game and c) you are overly bitter.

64 is worse but this team will be remembered because of the instant history of today's media

There is two sides to that: Will they be remembered because of instant history, or will they be quickly forgotten when the next instant history comes along?

Here's the thing though, the Mets were stacked, and the Phillies were looking to be one of the worse teams in the league. It's not that the Mets collapse was so big, but rather the circumstances, and the fact the Mets had just about every chance to win the division.

If the Phils don't make it to the World Series, 1964 was worse. Of course the '64 Reds and Cards payrolls combined and multiplied times 10 still doesn't equal the Mets payroll...
