With Ferrari gaining the advantage in the two previous rounds, it was a surprise when Alfa Romeo won the Bari Grand Prix just before the Monza race. It remained to be seen whether they could maintain the advantage in the World Championship race.
Alfa Romeo had four drivers, with Toulo de Graffenried coming in to the team. Ferrari fielded five drivers, including Chico Landi, who had won a lot of races in South America. BRM made the trip to Monza, along with the plethora of Talbot-Lago's and Simca's. Maserati stayed away for the race after a disaster in the previous race in Germany.
Alfa Romeo had the advantage after qualification, with Giuseppe Farina taking pole from Juan Manuel Fangio. The Ferrari's were in close pursuit. Reg Parnell put in a stellar drive to get his BRM in the mix with the Ferrari's. Unfortuately, the team had problems and none of their drivers were able to start the race.
Fangio led the race initially before Alberto Ascari went past. Fangio fought back to take the lead.
Giuseppe Farina retired early in the race. Fangio had an engine failure to concede the lead to Ascari.
Farina returned in Felice Bonetto's car, and stormed up to third place, only to suffer a fuel leak problem. He had to pit twice more, and was unable to continue to catch the Ferrari's.
The World Championship was still on for the final race in Spain, with both Fangio and Ascari in with a chance of victory. It seemed that the Ferrari's were the fastest cars, and Ascari was tipped as favourite.
