- February 2 - The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs is formed in New York at the Grand Central Hotel in New York City. The Boston Red Caps, Chicago White Stockings, Cincinnati Red Stockings, Hartford Dark Blues, Louisville Grays, New York Mutuals, Philadelphia Athletics and the St. Louis Brown Stockings are the original teams.
