1872 Boston Red Stockings

In their second year of existence, this future Atlanta Braves franchise team, currently known as the Boston Red Stockings of the National Association, went 39-8 and were the National Association Champions. Hall of Fame manager Harry Wright continued to manage the team.

21 year-old Al Spalding started all 48 games, and 404.7 of the 430 innings pitched (Harry Wright pitched 25.7 innings). Spalding's record: 38-8, with an ERA of 1.98, 41 complete games, 3 shut-outs, just 27 strike-outs and 27 walks.

Al Spalding (1939), George Wright (1937), and Harry Wright (1953) are all in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
