16-0? Can da Bears do it?

16-0.

Hasn't been done since the 1972 Dolphins, whose surviving members still pop champagne every year celebrating their accomplishment.

They better have extra cups this year, because this year's Bears team is going to join them.

Here's the stat that should jump out at ya: 156-36. The Bears are outscoring their opponents by a factor of 5!!! Looking ahead on the schedule, one can identify 4 key games that may pose a danger to the Bears chances of matching the record. They're all away games, the Bears have been magnificent at home this year and I don't see them losing there in front of their fans.

The 4 games are: Nov 12 @ NY Giants - The Giants are a hit or miss team this year, dangerous when they're on, terrible when they're not. The game depends on whether they go Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde when da Bears show up.

Nov 19 @ NY Jets - Deja Vu all over again? That's what da Bears might be thinking since they're back in the same stadium they were in a week ago. The J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! and Chad Pennington started out fairly strong but have started to live down to expectations. If Pennington is still healthy at this point in the season, they've got a chance to maybe squeak one out. This is the infamous "trap game" in the season, in my opinion.

Nov 26 @ NE Patriots - Although the Pats seem to have no legitimate WRs aside from Troy Brown, Tom Brady still makes it work somehow. Laurence Maroney seems to have found his niche behind Corey Dillon and could be starting in front of him by this point in the season. If there's a QB that can solve da Bears defense, it's Brady.

Dec 11 @ STL Rams - A popular sleeper team coming into the season, the Rams have made the prognosticators proud so far. Marc Bulger has done well, and is still healthy. Stephen Jackson and his bulldozer running style versus da Bears defense will be the key matchup. Da Bears seemed to have some trouble on the turf in Minnesota, will they here as well?

da Bears! 16-0. They can do it.

You've got to be kidding me. I saw the Bears won today and I was like, crap, now people are going to start talking about them going 16-0 until they finally lose. Here you are starting it. THE SEASON'S NOT EVEN HALF OVER! Don't bother talking 16-0 until they at least hit double digits.

He's right by saying that they should go undefeated at home. They have San Fran, Miami, Minnesota, Tampa Bay and Green Bay left at Soldier Field. So if they win all of those games, and lose every other game, they are 11-5. I don't see 16-0 happening, but they could very easily win 14 games.

They will have a let down at least once, as did the Colts last year. It happens to everyone except those Dolphins. Thats just how it is.

Maybe Baltimore could do it, but definetly not the Bears. They barely escaped the Viking a few weeks ago. They play either Dallas of Carolina, and one of them will burn the crap out of their secondary. NO CHANCE WHATSOEVER

No one will go unbeaten in the NFL - or any other league with a salary cap for that matter.

And again, the predictions. We have to put up with this any time a team starts 4-0. Will they go undefeated? Will they match that great Dolphins season? Nobody should start this silly conversation until AT LEAST week 11. Until a team has at least achieved double-digit victories, this conversation is not worth the time or energy.

Swaffy -- you have to think about it when the Bears have dominated opponents so far, and have a cupcake schedule. They realistically play two games that they might be underdogs... at NYG and at NEP. I think they'll be favored against the Giants, and New England barely amde it to 200 offensive yards yesterday at home against Miami. I don't think it's too early to talk about anything, including the Heat repeating or if the USA can win the Ryder Cup in 2008.

I don't have to think about anything of the sort. Manny's right. There are far too many unpredictables at this point. It's as silly a conversation to have as those who start talking about a hitter making a run at the hitting streak record when he's at 30. When you're not even halfway to achieving your goal, it's a worthless conversation to have.

Here's the big debate: can the Raiders go DEFEATED this season? 0-16? There's something that could actually happen.

Absolutely. Two straight losses to the Browns and 49ers sealed the deal.

I don't think the Giants will pose a problem unless they can learn to stop the pass, otherwise Berrian will burn them all day. I don't see the Jets being any risk. The two games I think you are right on about are the Patriots and Rams. They could go 16-0 becuase of the ease of schedule, but you never know who will get hurt as the season goes on. And don't forget, it only takes one team to get hot while palying the Bears. I agree, they can do it if all goes right, but it's too early to be talking undefeated. At least wait till after their east coast road trip.

When you are a Bears fan and a Chicago resident, and sat through 80+ years without a White Sox World Series, 99 (and counting) years without a Cubs World Series, no Blackhawks home games on TV and watching Jordan end his career in Washington, it's never too early for anything.

I was a Chicago resident, and lived through all of that, except for the 80 and 98 years respectively. I am not that old.

Who cares if they go 16-0 when they'll n get wiped out when the playoffs start? The Bears are not THAT good, records be damned... I'll take a lot of 14-2 and 13-3 teams from history that would SMOKE the Bears... hell, the '85 Bears would DESTROY this team.

By the Way... your opening paragraph has a GIANT error... the Dolphins went 17=0 (14-0 regular season and 3-0 in the playoffs/Super Bowl) NO team has ever gone 16-0.
