10 things I like about Derek Jeter

by user Manny Stiles

10 things I like about Derek Jeter:

1. He's a nice enough guy, I guess... I mean he might boot a few balls here or there but he's not kicking puppies or babies, right? Then again, they did kill a cow to make his glove...

2. Did he break up with Mariah Carey? Or did she break up with him? Either way, we're all better off for it...breaking up with Mimi also proves he's not gay.

3. He makes it easy to tell who lacks discernable sports knowledge - look for the people who wear his jersey (not including himself - he seems to have a fair amount of sports knowledge) and the obligatory mustard stain on the front...

4. Even though he's his team's second best shortstop, he knows Alex Rodriguez is a better 3rd baseman, so he stayed at shortstop...

5. OK, in all seriousness, the dive into the stands was a pretty nice effort and actually made him appear to look tough for a few days.

6. Back to the sarcasm - his baseball card is worth more than if he played for say...the Royals or Pirates, since people in New York would realize what type of player he REALLY is (since everyone who isn't a Yankee sucks!). I call this the Joe DiMaggio theory...

7. He will make a fine measuring stick of who should not be in inducted into the Hall of Fame (see Black Ink, Grey Ink, HOF Standards on baseball-reference.com - note his career stats compare similarly to Ray Durham's) In other words, if Alan Tramell and Roberto Alomar don't make it before Jeter, people need to be smacked into some form of sensibility.

8. His out-of-line statistical jump from 1998-2005 proves there's no way he could be considered in the 'performance enhancing drugs' conversation since no Yankee, person born in New Jersey or grew up in Michigan has ever cheated.

9. At least he's not the ugliest over-rated player in sports...(but he is the prettiest AND ugliest MOST-Over-rated player in sports). At least he gets to take the credit for being the main component in the highest paid roster winning the occasional championship. Ever notice Mr. November averages 1 World Series home run every 43 World Series at-bats???

10a. All those routine plays he turns into highlight plays because he has no range is uncanny! Plus, double digit GIDPs for 11 straight years from a 'speedy' singles hitter is amazing!

10b. It's really not his fault baseball hasn't fixed the Gold Glove or All-Star voting procedures yet.

Aww, what the hell... #11 - I don't hate him. I actually like him a small bit and sincerely feel bad for him. Instead of realizing Derek Sanderson Jeter is JUST a good baseball player; people will read this, FREAK OUT and hate me, spit at me and curse me to hell for ever suggesting Jeter isn't God's (and Gatorade's) gift to baseball...

Nice. I think you just overtook me in the rankings, but I haven't posted much this week. I would do a list like this about chipper jones, but i did something similar to it already. You're really posting a lot recently aren't ya! Keep going, this website needs more excitement.

I hate when baseball "experts" say they would rather have Derek Jeter on their team than Alex Rodriguez, becuase Jeter is a winner. Since we all know Jeter was SOLELY responsible for all those Yankees World Series victories. If A-Rod were on the team, they never would have won those championships.

If you factor in offense and defense, ARod has had about seven seasons better than Jeter's BEST season.

Yeah, I also thought that was hilarious. They're talking about a team with a payroll hovering right around $200 million, but it was Jeter that allowed them to win. It wasn't that their team basically could have been the AL All-Star team; no, it was Jeter.

Even though I hate the Yankees, I still respect Derek Jeter and his talent. When a player is as good as he is for as long as he has been, you've got to respect that.

Definitely, he is a good player and deserves respect. However, the media has totally overblown the talent of Jeter to turn him into some sort of god. He is good, maybe even great, but not the elite talent Joe Morgan and ESPN would have you believe.

Joe Morgan was WAY better a player and baseball mind than you think. Living legend elbow flap and all... My honest opinion is Joe Morgan would be a GREAT commissioner...

I realize how great a player he was and how smart a player he was. However, I think he is a little arrogant and self-centered at times, which may indeed make him a great commissioner.

At least he doesn't name drop like Harold Reynolds does. I like a lot of what Reynolds has to say, but he name-drops like it's going out of style.

Jeter is hands down a better defensive player than A-Rod. Here's a news flash - just because you don't like someone personally doesn't mean that person 'sucks'.

Hands down?? Have you watched baseball the last 12 years??? Please pass the crack back to Isaih... I have NOTHING against anyboday in the bigs personally. I have a beef with people who make us all a little stupider by saying things like Jeter is better than A-Rod... the OVERALL stats are similar, but compare SS to SS - 3B is harder to field...A-Rod makes plays look easy because he's good, Jeter makes plays look hard because his range sucks...A-Rod's errors come on balls few others can get to...the same ball hit to Jeter is not an error because he doesn't get leather on it

Isn't the general baseball rule that the best fielder plays SS. I mean, I'm no expert, but my understanding is that SS is the hardest position on the field. Personally, I hated playing 3rd, because I also didn't have the range, but Feel like short is the one that requires the most glovework

The only reason it seems like A-Rod is a much better fielder now is because he plays third base. I am a pure-bred Jeter hater, but he is a very good fielder. Shortstop is the hardest position on the field and has a ton of ground to cover. It also takes a better arm to play shortstop because the ball takes longer to get to you and you need to come up throwing right away. At third, the ball gets to you quicker and you have some time to get set and make a throw. A-Rod only makes third base look easy because he's naturally a shortstop. If both of them were playing SS, Jeter would definitely be better defensively.

SS is BY FAR a harder position to handle than SS. You're involved in more plays, you have less reaction time, more area to cover on groundies and pop-ups...

A Rod's fielding stats have actually gone down since he started playing third. Because it's a harder position to field. You have less time to react and farther to throw to first.

Derek Jeter is on pace, even with the decline adjustment factored in, for 3,000+ hits, almost 2,000 runs scored, and a lifetime .300+ BA. As a non-corner IF. When did that suddenly become not worthy of being in the HOF?

AGAIN, Derek Jeter is a 'good' to 'pretty good' player... - runs are not an individual accomplishment... a .300 avg doesn't make you a HOFer...as for 3000 hits, when/if he does it, we'll talk; then I'll tell you it's because pitchers had to pitch TO him because the lineup behind him is SICK (also expains the runs, huh?)... until then jump on the Jeff Kent HOF bandwagon...

BTW - Catcher is by far the hardest position to play, 3rd is the freaking scariest. A shortstop has more to do than a 3rd baseman, but you need better reactions and a stronger arm than SS Hey if Jeter is so freaking good, why didn't HE move to 3rd?

Runs mean you have to get on base and be a good base runner. Believe it or not, for a #2 hitter like Jeter, they're a very important stat. And common baseball knowledge is that SS is a more difficult position to play than third defensively overall. Dude, everyone knows that. E.V.E.R.Y.O.N.E. It's why someone like Cal Ripken had to be moved *to* third from short when he was in steep decline.

so then that explains why Troy Glaus can play SS, but Ozzie Smith never played 3rd... whether you play 3rd or SS has to do with range and arm strength... they're equally important poisitions for different reasons..besides Jeter should have moved to 2nd when A Rod came to the Yankees -it would have made more sense- and 5 bucks says Jeter finishes his career in OF, A Rod will always be an infielder.

So what if he does? Almost every SS has to eventually convert to another position if the play well into their 30s, as they decline. It says nothing of their talent, just of how hard short is to play. I don't what to tell you if you think Troy Glaus could play SS on even an acceptable level...

Gee, Anonymous, at 6'5" AND 240 LBS, Troy has played 18 games at SS, 6 this season, with No errors, 4 DPs... and I don't no anyone that considers him a top-notch 3b, yet there he is playing Shortstop!
