1-Year after the A.I. Trade: Was it the "Answer"?

12
Vote

by Highlite15

Allen Iverson doesn't seem to think so:

"If I was still in Philadelphia, I don't think they would be in the predicament that they're in right now," Iverson said. "The way the East is, I would think that we would be right there in the hunt. . . . I look at (Philadelphia's) games right now, and it looks like a rec league game or an AAU game when you see the attendance there. It just looks dull." - Rocky Mountain News

Exactly one year from the worst day in the history of me being a Philadelphia 76ers fan I got to thinking: was that trade the answer? Was trading the most beloved basketball player in Philadelphia since Dr. J the right move to turn around the Sixers' plummeting attendance and unbearable performance?  Let's take a look...

Sixers got:

Andre Miller,

Expiring contract of Joe smith and

2 first round draft picks - Jason Smith and the since-waived Derrick Byars (this kid was sick at Vanderbilt; I would take him over Rodney Carney any day of the week)

Nuggets got:

Allen Iverson

Ivan McFarland (not even worth mentioning)

Fast forward to December 19 th, 2007 what is the state of the Sixers one year later? Here are the top 5 positive outcomes of the trade:

  1. Billy King fired
  2. Billy King fired - and someone that actually knows how to spell basketball was hired
  3. Billy King fired - we won't have a GM with the brain of a chimpanzee spending the money
  4. We have enough money to aggressively go after Elton Brand this summer
  5. Andre Miller is a solid veteran pass-first PG to distribute the ball (if only he had anyone really worth passing to!)

And the negatives:

  • Allen Iverson 2007 #s (I thought he was declining and couldn't keep up this pace?) :
    • Best FG% of his career - 46.6%
    • 2 nd best APG of his career - 7.5 (wait that's better than Andre Miller)
    • Taking less 3pt shots and shooting the 4 th best % of his career - 32.8%
    • On Dec. 5 th while the Sixers were getting handled by the Celtics in front of a half filled arena A.I. was preparing to drop 51 on the Lakers (I am crying as I type this!)
  • No superstar worth paying to watch play
  • Sixers record: 10-14 including the 5 th worst scoring offense (at least if they were high scoring they could be exciting to watch)
  • Sixers average attendance: 12,126 (second worst in the NBA)

Bill Simmons says it best, "The lesson, as always: Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER trade a superstar for less than 75 cents on the dollar."

With that said I believe the jury is still out given the change in GM.  The feeling in Philly now that Ed's the man is a sense of confidence and hope.  I believe this summer will be the defining time for this franchise given the circumstances explained in the previous posts ( 1, 2).  It will either be the changing of the tide for the Sixers or the continued agony of their fans.

I have said before that the 76ers did not trade Iverson to get better they traded him so they could go into rebuilding mode. They knew that with Iverson they were at best a one and done playoff team that would continue on that road until they could free up cap space which they will finally have after this year.

I agree Simms. Thats the only explanation I could come up with after the trade. cap space + draft pics = rebuild.

Like my article says the best thing that happened was Billy King getting fired. They could have all the cap space and all the picks they want. If he was making the player decisions they were doomed to continue down the path they were going. If AI was still here they probably wouldn't be last in the league in attendence and likely have either the same or a slightly better record. That would have been enough to keep King in philly at least for another season.

Never claimed he was an expert - but he writes like a fan with good humor, which is entertaining. I can tell from your pointless comment...well...your not an expert. Happy Holidays!

that's the point man...the problem with simmons is that he doesn't understand how a trade (or ever a front office works). between iverson's salary and their desires, what can you get...really...the sixers wanted stuff to build on, not another big talent with a big price tag...

and Simms is dead on...trading iverson signified the end of an era...which (while i like iverson), was a good thing.

you're right, it did result in firing king...but unfortunately, not until after the draft.

but if you really wanna make people read your stuff, try not to insult your readers...

welcome aboard...

I completely understand the motives behind the trade and wrote an article about the flexibility Ed has this upcoming summer. My qualms are with the moves made surrounding A.I. that ultimately led to his departure, i.e. drafting VanHorn #2 (why? he said he didn't want to play in Philly, then trading him, trading for him, then trading him again, big lost opportunity with that pick), Glenn Robinson (why?), Jamal Mashburn (why?), Webber(why?) and overpaying for guys namely Sammy and Willie Green. I think he missed an opportunity early in A.I. career to build the right type of team around him. A.I. carrying them to a finals was the best he could do with what King gave him to work with. Nothing personal on my previous comment. Looking forward to more convos.

The Nuggets are a great team to watch. With Iverson and Anthony each average around 26.0 pts per game, it doesn't get any better than that for Denver. -Kwass

I personally think that the trade was good for everyone involved. And yes King needed to go. So did (or do) all of Philly's GMs. Iverson is an incredible player but he still isn't the leader that philly wanted him to be.

Basketball is boring so what.

Iverson was a great player but he was not being a good team leader. It was time to re-build and we're doing such.

Simms was right on in the first comment. THere's no other needs to comment anymore.

basketball is boring to some, that's your opinion...

A.I. put asses in seats... he was really "The Answer"...

Every team needs to build around a superstar, and I know that the Sixers are hoping Iggy pans out into one, but his growth would be much greater if he had Iverson with him...

McNabb and A.I. were the two biggest guys in Philly over the last decade... the city's sports are changing rapidly...

None of this would've happened if Iverson just went to practice....
