"The U" should quit football

The University of Miami, after the LSU debacle, stomping on the logo at Louisville, and now the most vicious, violent spectacle in College Football history against Florida International, is officially the most out of control football program, ever. What happened on the field Saturday night should NEVER happen. Miami players swinging their helmets, stomping on the back of legs, punching, kicking, none of it was even close to being acceptable. If this was an isolated incident, then I might consider suspending the offending players for the rest of year. But seeing has how this is becoming a trend of "Miami Football", I believe more severe action must be taken by the NCAA, because as of yet, the University seems unable, or worse yet, unwilling to stop the madness.

Miami should forfeit the rest of the games of year, be removed from post season consideration, and undergo a probation - cutting the amount of scholarships and being disqualified from bowl games for a couple of years. Larry Coker should be fired. Any players being shown on tape doing any of the above behavior should be kicked off the team and unable to play for any other college team. The NCAA needs to make an example of the 'Canes to put an end to this kind of behavior - period.

The proof that The U coaches don't seem to care too much can be heard in post game statements. Larry Coker says "This won't be a big negative on the University of Miami, I'll put it that way." Really? It won't? Please, Larry, you aren't that stupid, are you? Coker must have really let the team have it in the locker room too, because Kyle Wright, Miami Quarterback sure was apologetic in post game interviews. "It's something they started and our guys finished it. ... They're going home with a 35-0 loss and they're 0-7." Niiiiiiiice. Way to go guys, you really showed them a thing or too.

To contrast, the Florida International coaches were singing a different tune after the game. "Whatever penalty is handed down, especially from us, we're going to make it the most severe. We don't condone that. It's embarrassing.", FIU coach Don Strock said after the game. Larry Coker and his staff could learn a think or two from Mr. Strock.

The problem is that on one hand, the Miami discipline has been a little too leniant. On the other hand calling for measures as extreme as yours is overreacting.

To be fair FIU started the fight, a handful of Miami players got out of hand and should be suspended for the rest of the season. Coker's time at Miami may indeed be over but that should be performence based, not because of this.

Finally I really don't believe in punishing future athletes by taking away scholorships from a program. I went through the NCAA's sanctions on my Wolverine's basketball team and it was the stupidest thing ever to see a team that deserved to be in the Madness sit at home because of something that happened a decade ago.

I'd say the proper punishment in this case is to suspend the three players who went overboard for the rest of the season. Miami should keep themselves out of a bowl game but should be allowed to finish the regular season (it would actually be a worse punishment for them to deserve a bowl game and not get it then to just make them forfeit all their remaining games).

Outside of that Miami has to realize that this is hurting their public image and they need to reevaluate themselves and their staff, but they should do so on their own. No future sanctions should be taken.

Well said Cochise. I wouldn't mind the NCAA creating a behavoiral probation category for programs that seem to be out of control. It would have a escalating penalties sort of thing for future infractions, etc, etc. There are such rules in place for recruiting violations, but I think the behavoir of the atheletes and programs is just as big of an issue.

How far have you fallen when you scuffle with FIU? That's like a former President fighting a bum over a hal-eaten pizza crust under a bridge... Sad yet very enjoyable...

The University of Miami is a very highly rated school. The Football program and its rabid fans cast a negative light on the university. If I had a hard earned degree fro Miami, I'd like to see administration officials act with some integrity and tear the program apart by expelling the thugs involved an raising academic admissions standards. As it is, the football team wins but the university loses.

Yeah, they should have handed out escalating penalties. That's the problem - it had to come to something like this before the NCAA or ACC would step in and do something about them. I was laughing at the commentary when they broke the news during the UT-Baylor game. The commentators said that the coaching staff at Miami doesn't preach that behavior. Maybe not openly, but isn't that kind of thing unstated doctrine when you have little or no enforcement of behavior and when you have no disqualifications about who you recruit? This has been a problem at Miami for far too long, and it's way past time for the NCAA to let the school know that what they're doing is unacceptible.

Something has to be done - otherwise it'll be transferred into the NFL when they get drafted. Didn't a whole bunch of players come from Miami (Ray Lewis and a whole lot of others?) That's a lot of history to lose.

Yeah, Miami alumni have a stunning rate of arrest once they reach the NFL. I'd love to see stats on pro football arrests by college they attended. I seriously doubt any school would surprise the U.

I don't get it. People are jumping all over Miami but it was an FIU player who started to attack the holder on the PA. The fight was clearly the fault on FIU. Now, I saw 2 things, a guy trying to stomp another player and a guy swinging his helmet. Both those players should be given the same suspension as Ablert Haynesworth. As for Miami being more out of control than other schools, I just don't buy it.

You're pretty much just a complete fucking retard. I could elaborate, but it should be pretty obvious why I feel this way to anyone who read that drivel.

Coker's gone and things are a changin' under coach Shannon.

A two decade dynasty (no one has won more national championships or home games in the last 20 years) and an endless legacy (more active alumni in the NFL than any other school) add up to this simple fact:

THE 'CANES RULE, THEY WILL RETURN TO GLORY AND STRIKE FEAR AND AWE INTO THE HEARTS OF ALL OF THEIR OPPONENTS AGAIN!!! GO 'CANES!!! BRING THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY BACK WHERE IT'S COMFORTABLE!!!
