"OH CANADA!", more like "NO!, CANADA"

by user Pnatt

To me it's ridiculous how there's so many American teams in the Big Four North American major professional sports leagues. And what's worse is that in the NHL 24 of the 30 teams are American when hockey seems to have more of a following in Canada!

Here's the stats:
MLB: 29 American teams, 1 Canadian team
NBA: 29 American teams, 1 Canadian team
NFL: 32 American teams, 0 Canadian teams
NHL: 24 American teams, 6 Canadian teams

114 American teams to 8 Canadian teams is ridiculous. Why must Canadians be left slapped in the face? Why must money dictate where franchises are located? Capitalism in the extreme!

That's 8 more teams than Mexico has... how come you only focus on Canada? If there was so much talent in Canada, how come all of the hockey players come to USA to play? Why wouldn't they start their own leagues in Canada? It's because the Americans have the best leagues in the WORLD. PERIOD.

How do you get that the NFL is North American? National means one nation. It's not the International Football league. Technically speaking the NHL is wrong to have teams in more than one country.

Maybe the reason I focus on Canada is because Canada is appearently a more livable country than America?!

Alex is right. There's no way you can prove that the American sports leagues are the best in the world. What's to stop me from saying the Australian Football League is the best in the world or Alex saying that the FA Premier League is the best in the world. Hope you're happy Alex I said FA instead of English!!

Apples and oranges. "Best in the world" is about being the best league within your own sport.

To answer your questions, Canada has had other sports teams (Montreal Expos, Vancouver Grizzles) and they failed. Canada doesn't support much outside of hockey and they have the CFL.

Why did they fail? And why should American teams steal Canadian teams?

They failed because nobody went to the games. Don't sell tickets, don't make money, can't sign good players, can't win.

What does MLB owe to the Expos? The last decade was a joke and a half. I would often see Expos home games outdrawn by my hometown Trenton Thunder, a Double-A team. The people of San Juan, Puerto Rico wanted the team more than they did, outdrawing Montreal in their Expos home games despite having a stadium with 1/3 of the capacity. The fans didn't want to come anymore, and it is thus they gave up their right to that level of baseball. MLB tried to keep the team there, but eventually lost their patience.

I would love to see more Canadian teams (diversity rocks) but if it means having laughable franchises like the Montreal Expos (at least the last 10 yrs of the Expos) or the Vancouver Grizzlies (so bad they moved to a smaller city), I'll pass. And by the way, the CFL in the US thing was a colossal failure except in Baltimore, which may still have a team if it wasn't for the Ravens.

The US CFL teams were a big failure, just as an NFL franchise in a Canadian city would also be a huge failure. Although some fans of the NFL hail from Canada, the majority of the Canadian football fans prefer three-down football.

"Why must money dictate where franchises are located?" Because for some reason all those silly players, coaches, scouts, trainers, umpires, referees, team doctors, etc. want to get a paycheck.

Oh Pnatt, you're so cute with your minuses. I can picture you in school in history class (I'm assuming they have that in Australia) and you're teachers talking about World War II.

Pnatt: (raises hand)"Mrs. Smith, why did the Americans have to get invovled in world war II? Those b.s. capitalists have to ruin everything!" Teacher: "Well Pnatt, the Americans were bombed by the Japanese..." Pnatt: (interupting) MINUS YOU! Teacher: "I'm sorry? I was answering your ques..." Pnatt: (interupting again) "MINUS YOU AGAIN! HA HA!" Teacher: "Pnatt please go to the principal's office"

Pnatt: (leaving room) "Minus! Minus! Minus! Minus!..."

There should be measures in place by MLB, NBA, and NHL that each Canadian team should remain unless extraordinary circumstances arise.

Extraordinary circumstances being bankruptcy? 'Cause that's happened to some Canadian teams, or come close to happening. Sports teams are about making money, like any business. If they can't cut it on revenues they get sold and/or moved. That's reality. Grow up.
