Well, we're not PGA pros, but c'mon Phil, when you play it safe, you win. 3 wood off the tee, 5 iron into the green, get outta there with par.
Instead, Lefty hit a hack slice into a tent so far off the fairway that the "graduated rough" didn't even come into play. He then tried to hack out into the fairway, only to hit a tree 50 yards up. Oh, but things got worse for San Diego Phil. His next shot landed in a greenside bunker and his pitch out of that rolled all the way to the rough on the other side of the green.
So to rephrase, six strokes after being a par away from his third straight major win and a bogey away from a playoff with Geoff Ogilvy, Mickelson decided to take the scenic route to a second place finish and one of the biggest collapses since Jean Van de Velde and Greg Norman.
